Best frequent-flyer carry-on: Briggs & Riley Baseline

Baseline remains my personal favorite because its compression system, ballistic-nylon body, and unusually broad repair promise suit repeated travel. The current guarantee covers functional aspects for life, including airline damage when repair is possible, without proof of purchase. It excludes cosmetic wear, odors, stains, theft, and contents.

The catch is weight: some Baseline spinners are heavy before packing. Measure the full exterior including wheels and handles and check the operating airline—not just a retailer’s “carry-on” label.

Best practical alternative: Travelpro Platinum Elite

Travelpro’s crew heritage translates into sensible handles, wheels, pockets, and replaceable function. Platinum Elite’s limited lifetime warranty covers qualifying defects; registering within 120 days adds first-five-year common-carrier damage and shipping benefits. Registration is therefore part of the purchase, not optional housekeeping.

Best hardside for many travelers: Away—with a warranty caveat

Away offers clean organization and easy-to-replace mainstream sizing. But its warranty changed for luggage bought on or after April 14, 2026: complimentary functional repairs and up to one replacement apply during the first five years under current LifetimeCare terms, while later repairs may carry a service fee. Older purchases retain their prior warranty. Removable batteries must come out before checked baggage and may be restricted by airlines.

Best checked-bag value: Samsonite

Checked luggage is scratched, crushed, and occasionally lost. A reasonably priced Samsonite purchased on sale can be more rational than checking a luxury shell. Its warranty covers manufacturing defects, not airline damage, cracks, dents, abrasion, or normal wear—file visible transit damage with the airline before leaving the airport.

Tumi and Rimowa: good products, difficult value

Tumi’s current five-year wheeled-luggage warranty is more substantial than a simple one-year guarantee, with broader first-year coverage, but it is still not Briggs & Riley’s lifetime functional repair model. Rimowa can be enjoyable design and luxury ownership; neither brand automatically produces better travel outcomes proportional to price.

Buy in this order

  1. Measure the airlines and cabins you actually fly.
  2. Choose two wheels for rough surfaces or four for airports and hotels.
  3. Compare empty weight and usable internal volume.
  4. Read the exact warranty for the collection and purchase date.
  5. Check local repair access and shipping responsibility.
  6. Only then compare style and price.
