Firsthand result: a $900 GE washing machine failed shortly after its one-year manufacturer warranty. The eligible Amex claim was filed with the receipt and warranty information and was approved for the charged amount. That outcome is an example, not a promise that every failure qualifies.

What the benefit actually does

Extended warranty mirrors or extends an eligible original manufacturer warranty; it is not accidental-damage insurance and does not cover ordinary dissatisfaction. Current U.S. Amex terms for cards such as Platinum and Hilton Aspire can add up to one year to an original warranty of five years or less, up to the amount charged to the card and stated policy limits.

Before buying

  1. Open the current benefit guide for the exact card—benefits differ even within one issuer.
  2. Confirm the item, seller, country, and original warranty qualify.
  3. Charge the eligible purchase as required by the guide. Split payments can complicate the maximum covered amount.
  4. Save the itemized receipt, card statement, serial number, and manufacturer warranty as PDFs.

When the product fails

  1. Check whether the manufacturer or retailer still owes service.
  2. Photograph the product, model and serial number, and visible failure.
  3. Open the claim promptly using the issuer’s benefits portal or phone number.
  4. Provide a diagnosis or repair estimate if requested.
  5. Do not discard or repair the item until the administrator says you may.

Common reasons a claim may fail

  • The card no longer carried the benefit on the purchase date.
  • The failure was accidental damage, misuse, normal wear, or cosmetic.
  • The original warranty exceeded the policy’s limit.
  • The item was excluded—vehicles, living things, consumables, software, used goods, and professional equipment are common areas to inspect carefully.
  • The claimant cannot document the purchase, warranty, or amount charged.
