The rule that causes most EVA family-booking failures

Infinity MileageLands does not operate like a family pool. EVA tracks the origin of transferred miles, and its published rule says miles received from another member cannot be combined with:

  • The recipient’s own earned miles
  • Points transferred into the recipient’s account from a credit-card program
  • Miles transferred by a different third person

Suppose a parent has 60,000 miles and an adult child has 20,000 of their own. If the award costs 75,000, transferring only 55,000 does not create a usable 75,000-mile balance. The transferred 55,000 and the child’s own 20,000 remain separate. One eligible balance must cover the complete redemption.

Safer plan: If one person is funding the award through an EVA-to-EVA transfer, that person should transfer the full mileage required. If the traveler is using bank points, transfer enough bank points directly into the traveler’s own EVA account instead of trying to patch together balances afterward.

The 50% rule is about miles bought from EVA

EVA permits members to buy or top up miles, but purchased miles used for a redemption cannot exceed 50% of the total award price. Purchased miles also cannot be combined with miles received from another member.

This does not mean half the award must be earned by flying. EVA lists credit-card-program transfers as partner-earned award miles. The important distinctions are own/partner-earned, purchased, and transferred from another Infinity MileageLands member.

Prepare every traveler’s account before searching seriously

  1. Create a free Infinity MileageLands account for each traveler.
  2. Enter the name exactly as shown on the traveler’s passport. EVA award-ticket names must match the travel document, and ticketed names cannot be changed.
  3. Add a unique mobile number to each account and complete mobile verification. EVA says one mobile number can be linked to only one membership account for nominee and transfer OTPs.
  4. Confirm the account can access Manage My Account and Nominee List Management.
  5. Record current balances, mileage sources, and expiration dates.

Do this well before award seats appear. EVA’s security setup and nominee activation create delays, and scarce premium-cabin space may disappear while documents or verification are pending.

Register the family member as a nominee

The person sending miles is the transferor; the family member receiving them is the nominee. The recipient must already be an Infinity MileageLands member.

  1. The transferor signs in and opens Manage My Account → Nominee List Management.
  2. Add the recipient using the exact Infinity MileageLands account details.
  3. Complete the OTP sent to the transferor’s verified mobile number.
  4. Wait until EVA shows the nominee as effective before attempting the transfer.

EVA currently says an online nominee registration becomes effective 24 hours later. Registration submitted through a non-airport ticket office or service center can take five days after entry into EVA’s system. If the online function is unavailable, use EVA’s official form and the instructions from the service center serving your account region; do not send identity documents to an address copied from a blog or forum.

An effective nominee list is permanent. Green, Silver, and Gold members may register or transfer to up to six nominees per calendar year; Diamond members may use up to nine. Adding someone casually can therefore consume limited capacity.

Transfer a complete, usable mileage balance

Once the nominee is effective, use Manage My Account to transfer the full amount required from a single transferor. EVA sends another OTP for the transfer.

  • The transferred miles retain their original expiration date.
  • EVA transfers miles with the earliest expiration first.
  • The recipient sees the transferor’s membership number attached to that mileage balance.
  • Only the recipient can return transferred miles to the original transferor.
  • Offline transfer or return requests by Green members can incur a 3,000-mile charge per transaction; check the current terms for the channel and tier before proceeding.

Transfers are not a reversible experiment. Confirm the traveler, required mileage, expiration, and likely award availability first. Bank-point transfers into EVA are also generally irreversible.

Book and issue the award ticket

After the traveler has a sufficient usable balance, search and redeem while signed in to the relevant Infinity MileageLands account. EVA’s online booking handles many straightforward EVA/UNI Air and Star Alliance awards, but complex itineraries—such as certain stopovers or round-the-world awards—require an EVA reservation or ticketing office.

  1. Confirm every segment has award space in the required cabin.
  2. Verify the entire mileage cost comes from a permitted single balance.
  3. Enter the passenger’s full passport name and details.
  4. Pay the taxes and applicable charges.
  5. Issue the ticket before EVA’s ticketing deadline and before the miles expire.
  6. Save the ticket number, booking reference, mileage receipt, and fare rules.

EVA uses booking class I for international business awards, E for premium economy, and X for economy. Award tickets on international EVA/UNI Air flights are generally valid for one year from issuance, but the reservation and ticket rules shown for the itinerary control.

Changes, refunds, and the value of booking online

EVA currently permits online same-route date or flight changes for eligible award tickets originally issued on its official website. Exceptions include partially used tickets, itinerary changes, infant bookings, special-assistance cases, ancillary services, and promotional awards.

For an entirely unused award, a route or booking-class change may be possible. EVA publishes a US$50 service fee for Green members and a waiver for Silver, Gold, and Diamond members. Online refunds currently show no service fee, while refunds through other channels carry the same US$50 Green-member fee and elite waiver. Taxes, expired-mile treatment, award availability, and the exact ticket conditions still matter.

Check EVA’s current transfer and nominee rules and award-ticket rules immediately before acting.

Bottom line

EVA’s premium-cabin awards can be attractive partly because the program’s administrative friction discourages casual bookings. The winning strategy is preparation: create each account, verify each phone, establish nominee access, and map every mile’s source before valuable award space appears.
