Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add my first card?
- If your wallet is empty, tap Add Your First Card on the Which Card tab. Otherwise, tap the gear in the top-left of any tab, then tap My Cards.
- Tap the + button in the top right.
- Search for your bank or browse the list, then select your card template.
- Review the pre-filled name, rewards currency, point value, card color, and category multipliers.
- Make any changes, then tap Save.
Tip: Use a card template to save time — multipliers and credits are pre-filled for popular cards.
How do I find the best card to use?
- Tap the Which Card? tab at the bottom.
- Tap the spending category (e.g., Dining, Airline, Hotel).
- If a category has subcategories (e.g., Delta under Airline), tap to drill down.
- CardPecker shows your best card at the top with the effective return percentage.
- All other cards are ranked below for comparison.
Tip: Effective return = multiplier × point value. The higher, the better.
How do I track credits and benefits?
- Tap the Benefits tab at the bottom.
- Tap + to add a credit, or add a card template — credits are added automatically.
- When you use a dollar credit, tap it, enter the amount, and confirm.
- When you use a free benefit (e.g., lounge access), tap it to mark one use.
- Fully used credits move to the Used filter automatically.
- Credits auto-refresh at the start of each new billing period.
Tip: Credits from card templates are automatically categorized (Hotel, Airline, Dining, etc.).
How do I view credits by card, date, or category?
- In the Benefits tab, tap the view mode icon in the top-left toolbar.
- By Card — credits grouped under each card. Use Active / Used / All filters.
- By Date — all active credits sorted by expiration date.
- By Category — active credits grouped by category.
Tip: Use By Date to spot credits expiring soon.
How do Rewards balances work?
- Open the Rewards tab and tap + to add a loyalty program and balance.
- CardPecker estimates its value using a dated reference valuation that you can edit.
- Tap a program to update its balance or personal point value.
- For supported programs, CardPecker Sync can fill in balances from Safari.
Tip: Rewards tracking is included in CardPecker 1.4; there is no premium upgrade or paywall.
How do Offers and Nearby work?
- Offers opens on Nearby the first time and remembers the view you last selected.
- Grant location access to find in-store offer merchants around you. Later launches prefetch nearby results when permission is already granted.
- Use All to browse current offers or Activated to focus on offers you saved for use.
- Use the status button to activate an offer, mark it used, or restore it. Swipe left to delete.
- When the same merchant deal appears more than once, CardPecker combines it into one row.
Tip: Imported offers may still require activation on the issuer's website. Confirm there before relying on an offer.
How do I set up CardPecker Sync?
- Tap the gear in the top-left of any tab, then tap Set Up Sync.
- In iOS Settings, go to Apps → Safari → Extensions → CardPecker Sync and turn it on.
- Allow the supported bank and loyalty websites you want to use.
- In Safari, sign in yourself and open a page showing your rewards balance or offers.
- Return to CardPecker. Pull down on Rewards to refresh; captured offers appear in Offers.
Privacy: The extension does not read or store your passwords. It passes only the balance and offer information displayed on the page to CardPecker on your device.
Where are Receipts?
- Tap the gear in the top-left of any tab, then tap Receipts.
- Tap + to enter a purchase, or tap a recommended card and choose Log receipt for a pre-filled form.
- Use Scan Receipt to photograph a paper receipt or choose an existing image.
- Review the recognized merchant and amount before saving.
Privacy: Receipt recognition runs on your iPhone. Attached images stay in the app's local files and are included in backups.
How do backup and restore work?
- Tap the gear, then Backup & Restore.
- Use Export Backup to save a manual .cardpecker file wherever you choose in Files.
- Automatic backups go to your own iCloud Drive. Weekly is the default; you can choose Off, Daily, Weekly, or Monthly.
- Import Backup replaces the app's current data with the selected backup, so export a fresh backup first.
Tip: CardPecker keeps the five most recent automatic backups. Files and iCloud backups remain after you uninstall the app until you delete those files yourself.
How do I manage categories?
- Tap the gear in the top-left of any tab, then tap Spending Categories.
- Tap + to add a custom category with a name, icon, and color.
- To add a subcategory, tap an existing category and set it as the parent.
- Swipe left on a category to delete it.
Tip: Subcategories let you set different multipliers per brand — e.g., Hyatt vs. Other Hotels.
Can I replay the introduction?
Yes. Open the Which Card tab and tap the information button in the top toolbar. Tap Done when you finish.
Is my data private?
CardPecker is local-first and has no TravelPal account, analytics, advertising, tracking, or external CardPecker data server. TravelPal cannot access your app database or backups. Nearby uses Apple Maps when you grant location permission, Safari Sync reads supported pages you choose, and automatic backups use your own iCloud Drive.
Uninstalling deletes local app data. Backup files in Files or iCloud Drive remain until you delete them separately.
